Update To The Patients of IIDC
As British Columbia takes steps to slow the spread of COVID-19, our office wants to provide some specific answers for our unique patient populations and notify you of some changes in how our office will operate.
As Infectious Diseases physicians, we fully endorse the advice to practice social distancing, hand hygiene, and self-isolation for any symptoms of COVID-19 (new cough, fever, or runny nose). We suggest that the BCCDC be used as a source of information on this infection and the steps we should all take to slow its spread, as well as what to do if you think you may have COVID-19.
As part of social distancing We ask that:
o Patients not attend the office if they have any of cough, fever, or runny nose or have traveled abroad in the last 2 weeks. Please follow the self-isolation or quarantine measures indicated on the BCCDC website (handout can be provided).
o All patients use the office’s hand sanitizer immediately upon entry, and wear a mask if required.
o We are currently implementing telehealth appointments when possible, you will be contacted to change your appointment type if appropriate
*Please note office policies and appointments will evolve as recommendations change to manage the pandemic*
For our patients with HIV:
If your CD4 count is above 350, we do not currently have any indication that you would be at increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease.
For our patients with current or treated viral hepatitis but not cirrhosis, we do not currently have any indication that you would be at increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease.
For our patients with HIV and a CD4 count below 350; with current or treated viral hepatitis with cirrhosis; who are older than 60; or who have other immune compromised states, you may be at higher risk of severe COVID-19 disease.
If you may be at higher risk, we suggest that you stringently follow the advice provided by the BCCDC at the above link and avoid public areas where you will be in close contact with others as much as possible.
While the spread of COVID-19 through our communities is alarming to many, including the physicians and staff of Island Infectious Disease Consultants, please remember that the majority of COVID-19 cases seem to be mild. If we all strive to protect those most at risk and ‘flatten the curve’ to preserve health care resources, we can minimize the impact of this infection and save lives.
